Clarins 'Oil tonic'

Yesterday, we went to dinner with Kawano at a Thai restaurant near Liverpool St station. She'd just come back from her business trip to Germany. Well, I wanted to see her urgently for the goods I'd asked her to get for me at Duty Free shop. It's Clarins 'Oil tonic' . I bought a bottle about 2 months ago when I could not stand the itchiness of my bump and breasts. The oil turned out to be brilliant and I've already used it up.

This oil, yellow in colour, include Geranium and Rosemary extracts, and it smells nice and soothing. From the day I started to use it, itchiness was miraculously gone. I expected slightly more greasy texture, but it's not that bad. It's also nice to have the scent spreading in the bedroom.

In general, I am not interested in cosmetics for 'body'. I've never finished any sort of hand or foot cream. Yet this oil has gone so quick. Of course, the surface of my bump and breast are getting bigger day by day and the amount of the oil to apply increase everyday. I reckon this new bottle won't last for 2 months.

Yes, the bump and breasts are expanding every day. My weigh is now 64 Kg. When I catch a glimpse at my body while taking shower, I feel very depressed. My body is so bumpy. The 2 mounts around my breasts are sagging being defeated by the gravity. I used to be very proud of the beautiful vertical and straight shape of my belly button. But now it is round and looks like a Japanese character 'の'. My body looks like a completely different creature. Is it really true that the body shape will be restored after birth as Madonna or Liz Hurley did?

The 2nd Antenatal Class

Jason and I went to the 2nd Antenatal Class. Topics were about delivery. Today's memo.....

1. Don't push too much

Tend to push stronger than needed but follow midwife's instructions. Baby comes out slowly anyway and strong pushes sometimes cause episiotomy or the cervix swollen which ends up with longer labour.

2. Caesarean

Caesarean rate in the U.K. is about 25 %. At Royal London Hospital, except for breech position or some medical conditions, they usually do not accept caesarean request for the reason of 'Too posh to push'.

3. Enema before delivery

Upon our request to midwife.

4. Other issues to tell midwife beforehand

If you want the baby cleaned first before he is put on you just after birth: Usually baby is put without being cleaned
If partner wants to cut the umbilical code: In some cases, it is cut during delivery by doctor or midwife if necessary
The choice of pain relief: Gas or epidural etc.
If you want to have after birth naturally: Usually we are given injections to cause after birth

Very useful information....

32th Week Ultrasound check-up and the 3rd Antenatal Clinic

Antenatal Clinic

The 32nd week ultrasound check-up at the Royal London Hospital. Jason was with me. Unfortunately, we did not get any photos this time. In the beginning of the session, the technician showed us the face of the baby. We could see his round face with 2 big eyes, nose and lips! In the last scan, we were told that his abdominal measurement was bigger than the average but it was quite normal today. The estimated baby weight is 2 kg. The baby was moving all the time during the scan. The technician also said, 'Your baby is really active.' Probably he could hear ultra sound and wanted to say, "Noisy! Stop it!" By the way, we were told again that it was very clear that the baby is a boy...

I went to the Antenatal clinic appointment after the scan. It was my 3rd visit. The doctor who consulted me today was the same Indian (?) female doctor as before. I still could not understand her English with very strong Indian accent. After asking her to repeat for a couple of times, I figured it out that she was asking if I saw a kidney specialist after my kidney scan. I told her that I had been told there was nothing to worry by her last time. But she wanted to know the cause of blood trace in my urine. Actually, it was Blood+++ in my today's sample. I had to repeat my story again; I had a kidney infection when I was child, it's running in my family and I have not been done proper investigation of the cause in my life. She then decided to ring a specialist in other clinic and asked for some advice. A kidney specialist told her that I should go for the further check-up, probably biopsy, after birth. In the meantime, he can check how my kidney conditions will affect pregnancy from the results of another blood tests - antibody, hepatitis A, B, C etc. I went to blood tests again later and I need to come back in 2 weeks time for the results.

Baby Clothes

Baby clothes

We went to Asda, Tesco, Mothercare etc to buy extra babygros. It was cheaper in Asda but we bought quite a few from Mothercare as they had 'Buy 1 get the 2nd for half the price' sale. 2 vests, 2 bodysuits and 3 sleepsuits each for newborn and next size cost only 15 pounds in total! Together with the babygros my mum sent to us, we now have enough starter underwear for the baby. (Unless the baby is huge!)

There were so many cute clothes at Mothercare. Jason and I could not stop buying them. Jason suddenly became 'father' and he picked a couple of nice clothes. He bought fashionable trousers and hooded cardigan set, 2 pieces of cute tops from Mothercare. He then bought from another shop a matched small hat and a pair of mittens, saying, 'I think the hat here is nicer than the ones in Mothercare!' I also bought a set of white trousers, bodysuit, cardigan and hat for the newborn....

I bought 36 pieces of maternity pads. Should be enough. After finishing them, I will do with normal sanitary pads.

I am going to breastfeed but I still need a couple of bottles. I was thinking about buying steriliser bottles, which can be microwave sterilised without any other equipment but decided to do more research on bottles. German manufacturer NUK seems to be a good choice. Their teats are designed to be very similar to the real ones. By the way, the silicone teats with no colour can last longer (1.5 months) than coloured rubber teats (1 month). NUK do not have microwave steriliser bottles but I will go for them. For sterilising bottles, I will probably just boil them in a big pan for 10 minutes. Oh, no, but according to some sites, the teats deteriorate quicker if we boil them.... very difficult..... I may end up buying a microwave steam steriliser, which is about 15 pounds, and NUK bottles?

Baby show

Baby show

We went to the Baby Show at the exhibition centre in Olympia. There were lots of booths or areas of different baby and infant product manufacturers etc. We queued up at a couple of places to receive sample goods, like nappies, nappy wipes, baby food etc and we tested a few buggies. The place was packed with parents with small children.

We are thinking about using only disposable nappies but Jason has seemed to take interest in re-usable as well. Well, we saw a couple of companies demonstrating re-usable nappies. Babies anyway do not wear the re-usable directly but kind of pads are placed on the nappies and they can be flushed down the toilet. So it may not be as messy as we thought. We will probably try both disposable and re-usable.

After seeing a buggy 'XPLORY' from Norwegian manufacturer
STOKKE, we really wanted to have one. But it is quite expensive, about 500 pounds. When you look at a top quality product, it will become difficult to downgrade... very dangerous! I also saw quite a few parents carrying their babies using a sling. It looks quite handy as you do not need to push bulky buggies and both hands are free. If we can carry our baby with a sling in the first couple of months, we will not need a buggy for newborn and it will be much cheaper.... Jason is looking for baggies. I will let him decide on buggies, while I will chose bottles or nappies etc.

We went to our first Antenatal Class at the Royal London Hospital. The classes are operated by NHS and there are four 2 hour sessions to attend.

There were about 15 pregnant women and their partners. The lecturer was a midwife with nearly 20 years experience. She used models of pelvic bones and babies to explain. A model of a new born baby was passed around. I thought 3.5 kg was quite heavy!

I just write down what we were taught for my future references.

* What to bring to hospital - Hospital bag

* Delivery: Is happening during 2 weeks before and after the due date. It takes 12 to 18 hours. Even if it happens around 36 weeks, it will be no problem as baby's development is completed by the time, although it is still called 'premature birth'. The baby is a bit skinny as he has not had enough layer of fat yet.

When to call the hospital: If strong contractions, which last more than 40 seconds, happen more than 4 to 5 times in 10 minutes, or the water breaks. If the cervix becomes 10 cm wide, we are going to the labour. It opens 1cm per hour on average.

How to breath: Just breath gently. No need to do hehe, fufu.....

Massage to avoid episiotomy: To avoid 'the' part to be torn or be cut during labour, there is a quite effective massage as precaution. Using vegetable oil, such as olive oil, 5-10 minute massages from about 6 weeks before the due date are quite helpful. As we can not do it by ourselves, our bumps are too big, the midwife suggested the partners to help. Well, a bit embarrassing.....

The women in the class are between 28 to 34 weeks. Quite a few of them work till 1 or 2 weeks before the due date. I will stop going to work just 2 weeks before the X day as well. I also book 2 seats for this year's Christmas party, which is held on the next day of my last working day. Well, Japanese bosses seem to get surprised, but probably quite normal decision for the local people. Oh, there was another Japanese woman who is also 31 weeks. She also said that she will work another 6 weeks. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Can not get relaxed during a facial

I had a facial session today. As electric device can not be used on pregnant women, Yana used steam to do deep cleansing. She put the upper side of the bed slightly up for me because my bump is quite big now and she knows it is more comfortable in this way.

It is really nice to have facial done as usual. But for some reason, the baby was really active during the whole session. On top of that, lying down on my back for about one hour was uncomfortable. I felt really out of breathe. So, I could not get relaxed much... I usually fall a sleep when Yana's massage starts but it was impossible today. I'd been thinking about coming again just before my due date but I decided not to do it. I will have to come back for the deep deep cleansing after birth.

British made bump belt

Bump Belt

I was wearing a British made bump belt (9.95 pounds) first time yesterday. It's just a stretch belt with magic tapes to fasten. Quite like the belts we use on suitcases.... But this is the only product in this country. With the support of this belt, I feel much better. In Japan there are more gadgets like the support underwear from immediately after your birth to put your body shape back etc. But nothing similar can be found here...

We also went to the wholesaler COSTCO with Yuki and Kawano. We can buy anything, in bulk of course, for lower prices. Kawano and I were really excited and visited every single corner of the store and bought a lot. I bought nappy bags, which are used to throw away nappies, and Pampers nappy wipes. We went to ASDA as they also do baby things and I bought our baby's first nappy, a packet of Pampers No.1 disposable nappies, and breast pads. Jason and I were supposed to compare which is cheaper at COSTCO or ASDA? But both of us are useless. We can not remember the prices..... I've learnt something new today. Nappies are numbered according to its size and we choose the right number based on the baby's weight.

George, one of my many Malaysian Chinese friends for a long time, rang me yesterday. He had his first son born 3 months ago. He and his wife live in Kent now. We have to visit them soon!

Surrounded by ladies!

Soho Japan 3

Soho Japan 1
Soho Japan 4
Soho Japan 2

We went to Manama's leaving dinner at 'Soho Japan' Japanese restaurant. My female friends often ask me if they can touch the bump, and when women touch it, our baby reacts better. Most of us at Soho Japan today were female and my bump was kept being touched. He must have been a bit shy and nervous, he did not entertain us at all... And he was called Arata-kun by them. His name will be dicided naturally like this...?

Out of breath

I have often become out of breath recently. When I am sitting, as I am leaning back, the bump may pushes my lungs. I need to stand up and walk around from time to time to push the bump down a bit. I am going to be suffocated like this... I've still got 2 more months to go.

As I felt breathless, I took off the bra 2 days in a row during day time. I need a proper maternity support bra. At M&S, I had my bra size measured and bought one. It's 18 pounds and size 36D; I was told my size is between 36D and 38D. There are 6 hooks on it and it's easy to adjust. I should have bought one much earlier... I also learnt that we can buy nursing bras at around the 37th week. By then, the baby will drop and the underband will be more accessible. I will drop into the M&S just before my maternity leave starts.

Satomi has lent me a couple of good bump belt or supports but they are slightly smaller for me. I may try buying a British made bump belt anyway.

The second Antenatal Clinic

I had the second antenatal clinic this morning at the Royal London Hospital. To avoid long waiting hours, I booked the earliest appointment, at 9 am, but I still had to wait for 1 hour! And another 1 hour for the blood sample taken.....

The doctor I met today was an Asian female doctor. She speaks with very strong accent and it was quite difficult to understand her. I had to ask her to repeat many times. There was an intern female doctor as well and she measured the length of my bump and checked the baby position by touching the bump. From the length of the bump, the doctors said that my baby is growing normal. The heart beat present. My blood pressure was also normal (100/60). I've been concern about my blood pressure because my mum suffered from high blood pressure when she was pregnant with me and I may also have it. Luckily, so far no symptoms and I really hope it will not happen to me. Some blood trace as usual and a small amount of protein was found in my urine sample. There was some white cell in it as well and the sample was sent to the further examination. I may have some infection like cystitis.

The doctor explained me the results of the ultrasound check-up on kidneys and bladder which I took about a month ago. The bladder and the left kidney are normal but there is 9 mm cyst in my right kidney. Noting serious, the doctor reassured me. I had to go for another blood test, though, and I will come to see a doctor for the result in 2 weeks time. By the way, I was quite surprised to know that my right kidney is 11 cm long! I did not know kidneys are so big.

We bought a car

New Car

Jason was talking about buying a car as it would be handy once the baby is born. But I had totally forgotten about that when he proudly announced, ' I've bought a car.' It was already after the midnight and I was sleeping in bed. Being surprised, I asked, 'Where from?' He said, 'On eBay.' 'Whaaat?' The eBay is an Internet auction site and I have bought and sold small things such as DVDs before. However the site is also notorious for fraud and I thought buying a car from the site was a bit risky.

Well, I know Jason knows what he is doing. Within a few days, he checked the stolen and accident records of the car, which can be obtained from the serial number of the car, then went to Oxford to meet the owner and had a test drive. The legal transfer did not take long and we went to get the car this morning.

It's a dark blue Audi, 1800cc. As I will also need to drive a car, he chose an automatic car. The car was first registered in 1995 but about 10 years should not be considered as 'old' in this country. Anyway, it's a German car. Must be quite reliable. Jason prefers manual operated cars and apparently he looked bored without gear changes and for a couple of times he stepped on the brake thinking it was the crutch!

We went to the Oriental City on our way back. It's a small Chinese mall with a supermarket, a couple of small shops and a food court. There is a Japanese food section as well. We had Vietnamese lunch and bought 10 kilos of California rice.

Baby's positions

I had a day off yesterday as I felt I was going to catch a cold. After staying in bed all day, I feel much better. But I could not sleep well last night, because I slept too much during the day time, and I had lots of nightmares.

At the last check up, I was told that my baby is lying head to top, breech, position. I've checked when the baby will go upside down. It's between the 33th and 34th week and at around 37th to 38th week, the baby gets 'engaged' in the pelvis.

In addition, I've found that it is quite important which way the baby is facing to, posterior or anterior position. If the baby is lying in a 'posterior position - with its back to my back, it will be harder for the baby to engage in the pelvis. What's more, at this position in labour, the water breaks at the beginning of labour, I will have lots of backaches between contractions, the baby may need a suction device to come out and it will take longer in labour.

More women tend to have babies in a posterior position nowadays. It's because we have stopped moving during pregnancy and instead, sitting in a comfortable sofa or working all day at desk. These reduce the chances to the baby to turn round to the anterior position, as babies can not set position their back to our back naturally with the head weight. To put the baby right position, we need to make sure knees are always lower than the hips. Put cushions under the chair to keep the keens below hips, move round from time to time at work, watching TV on all fours 10 minutes par day. In England, their grannies used to say that the cleaning the kitchen floor on all fours was good for labour. It's probably logical. Is Japanese old saying 'Let pregnant women clean the toilets' same thing??

I always sit on the bed stretching my legs and do the internet. It does not seem to be good, either. Probably, it is still ok but I have to be careful in a couple of weeks time.

Japanese traditional bump belt and maternity cushion

salashi type bump belt

I can not move swiftly at all. I put the keyboard virtually on my bump at work and leaning my back behind . When I have to answer the phone, it is a big work. I have to get up with lots of effort and reach the handset. At night, it will never become comfortable. Whenever I turn my body, I groan and pull the duvet. Jason probably can not sleep well, either.

I read about maternity pillows on the Internet and decided to try them out. There are 3 different types. Bolster like, 2 cushions attached, and wedge shaped types. The bolster type looked good but for some reason they are very expensive in the U.K. unlike U.S. I bought a wedge shaped type from eBay. I slept with it yesterday and it was not bad. I may need another one as I turn my body during night. I put a small bolster from Singapore between my thighs, put a pillow under my shoulders and put this maternity pillow under my bump. Hope my sleeping conditions will be improved.

The cloth type bump belt. I've been wearing it today. I checked how to put it on on the net. Yes, it is quite comfortable as I can adjust the tightness. But as expected, it becomes loose easily and I feel like taking it off whenever I go to the toilet. A bit too much work.... I will try it on weekends for a while to get used to it, then probably at work when the bump grows bigger.

I've read that this bump belts are a Japanese original and they do not exist even in Korea nor China. It's just a piece of long cotton cloth. Women used to use husband's Fundoshi - also a piece of long cloth to use as underwear before Western style briefs were introduced - as a bump belt.....

Meeting other mums

I went to Sagami's to meet other mums. She is organizing an Internet news group for Japanese women in the U.K. and some of them have experiences to give birth in the U.K.

I met 3 families including Sagami's. They all have small children of 9 months, 1 year 3 months, and 2 years and 3 months (?) old. It seems that the children are all about the same age, but a couple of months difference is quite big at this stage of life. The 2 girls, one year apart to each other, are a good example. The younger one trys to speak but we can not make it out. On the contrary, the older one can already communicate with us. Once babies reach this stage, it must be really fun to look after them! The youngest babies was only 9 months old but he already eats bananas or bread....

One of the mums took her son back to Japan when he was only 2 months old. He was sleeping all the way to Japan as he was just newly born, but when they came back to the U.K., 3 months later, the baby kept crying. He must had grown up to sense the outside world much better. Well, it's good news. I can take my baby to Japan during maternity leave. She also told me that she was planning to go back to work after 6 months but once she met her baby, she changed her mind. The baby is so adorable and has become the best thing in the world, probably above her husband? She's now thinking how to extend her leave. Interesting. Let's see how I will feel.

Some of them pointed out that my bump may be a bit lower than usual. I said, 'Probably, because my legs are short and my body is long.' Chika san told me that she also had a lower bump and she was wearing cloth type bump belt, which was really good. She needed her husband help to put it on, though. I'll probably try the one my mum sent to me.

By the way, I had met Sagami's husband before. When I played golf for a competition about 2 years ago, I rounded with him in the same group. Small Japanese society in London...
