ママはロンドンでますみちゃんとおしゃべり。エンバンクメントの川に浮かぶ船のパブでお昼を食べて、サボイでコーヒー。アラタはダディとドライブ。海まで行ってきた。波を怖がってダディにひっついていたらしいけれど。
I went to London to see Masumi. We had a lunch at a moored boat pub in the river Thames at Embankment, then went to the Savoy hotel to have coffee. Very relaxing. Arata went to sea with daddy. He was scared with the big waves, Jason said.

だというので、プラハへの週末旅行計画を急遽棚上げして楽しみにしていた。
運良く暑すぎずちょうどいい気温で、まずは早めに到着してピクニック。周りは、なぜか女性だけのグループが多く、ワインやピムスでわいわいやっている。私まで、アルコール抜きなのにほろ酔い気分になって来て、お馴染みの曲が流れ出すと、立ち上がって踊りだす。もう妊娠８ヶ月なんですけど…と思いながらも止められず、10キロあるアラタを抱っこしながら踊る踊る。アラタもママとダンスが楽しくて、かなりハイな気分。花火が終わる10時半過ぎまで眠そうな様子もみせなかった。今までピクニックコンサートに何回か行ったが、観客が総立ちになっているのを見たのは初めて。Jason曰く「いかにも女性受けしそうな企画だもの。」次回は女友達だけで行くか。
We went to a Picnic concert at Kenwood house in Hampstead Heath. The event was
'A tribute to Dirty Dancing'.
To be able to be there, I even changed the date of our short holiday. Well, 'Dirty Dancing' is one of my most favourite films.
Luckily the weather was not so bad (not too hot). We arrived at the lakeside early enough to enjoy a picnic first. Once the concert started, I couldn't help but standing up and dancing, with Arata, about 10 Kg now, on my waist! I am already 8 month pregnant, I knew, but I couldn't stop it. Arata also looked he was enjoying dancing with mum. He didn't look tired at all until the fireworks finished at 10.30 PM. I've been to picnic concerts many times but it was the first time I saw so many people standing up and dancing. Jason said, 'I didn't get surprised because I could expect it. It's the event which attracts lots of women.' I will probably go there again with just my female friends!
ハナちゃんの一升餅。一歳の誕生日に一升の重さのお餅を背負って歩かせ、「一生」しっかりと歩いていけるようにと祈るお祝い。私はその伝統の存在すら知らず、当然アラタはやっていない。ハナちゃんは歩き始めたばかりだけれど、お餅を背負って上手に歩いた。パチパチパチ！その後、お雑煮から始まって、まるで、お餅のコース料理というぐらい、いろいろなアレンジのお餅をたらふくいただきました。さすが、りつこさん、全ておいしかったわ。ここ数日、夏ばて状態で食欲があまりなかったけれど、今日ですっかり挽回。私も餅つき機がほしい。

Hanna's 1st birthday party. There is a Japanese tradition to make a year old child to carry and walk with '1 sho mochi', glutenous rice cake, of about 1.5Kg. 'Sho' is an old Japanese unit of measurement. 'One sho' is pronounced 'Issho' which is the same sound as 'whole life.' This ceremony is to bless a one year old child, who has just started to walk, to be able to walk the rest of her life safely. I didn't even know the existence of this tradition and Arata didn't have one. Hanna has just started to walk but she made a couple of steady steps with the mochi on her back. Well done!
After the ceremony, we had plenty of differently arranged mochi dishes! Ritsuko, Hanna's mum, is always a very good cook. They were so tasty. In the last couple of days, I didn't have much appetite because of the heat but I've made up for it in just a few hours!
暑すぎる。昨日はロンドンで36度にもなった。冷房なんてない地下鉄の中は45度ぐらいになって、バスなんてもっと暑かったらしい。こんな日が出勤日だとラッキーなのだけど（会社にはさすがに冷房がある）、今日はうちにいたから本当に参った。昨日ほど外気は暑くなかったはずだけれど、フラットの最上階でエアコンなしは厳しい。朝から何度もシャワー浴びて、昼過ぎにはショッピングモールまでどうにかたどり着き、まゆみさん、りかさん親子と5時近くまで、もちろん「冷房の効いた」フードコートで粘る。
アラタは日曜日からオムツかぶれがひどい。実は初めてのオムツかぶれ。下痢していたのに、オムツをしばらく替え忘れたのだけれど、こんなに簡単になるとは知らなかった。オムツを替えようとすると痛いのがわかっているからものすごい勢いで逃げる。降参したのか、今朝は、オムツを替えている最中に、自分で軟膏のふたをあけて足の間に塗っていたからびっくり。夕方に少し昼寝した時はオムツをはずしてあげた。これで少しよくなるといいのだけれど、明日ナーサリーにいけばまた元に戻りそう。ナーサリーではそんなに頻繁にオムツを替えないからなあ…。

It's too hot. It was a record 36C in London yesterday. It was more than 45C on tube and much hotter on buses. If I am at work, it's not bad because our office has air conditioning. But like today, the day I don't go to work, it's extremely uncomfortable. We are on the top, 5th floor, and of course, without air conditioner. I took shower a couple of time this morning and managed to escape to the Peacock centre, the nearby 'air-conditioned' shopping mall, around lunch, then stayed at food court till about 5 pm, with Mayumi and Rika's families.
Arata has had terrible nappy rash since Sunday. Well, we forgot to change his nappies a day before, even though he had diarrhea. It's the first time he has so bad nappy rash and I didn't realise that it's so easy to get one. Arata knows it's sore to have nappy changed and he runs away very seriously when we try to change his nappies. But he must have learnt a lesson. This morning, Arata opened a pot of nappy rash ointment, when I was changing his nappies, and applied it by himself!!! When he had a short nap this evening, I took off his nappy. Hopefully, it will get better soon. At nursery, they don't change nappies as often as we do at home, and we can't expect his condition will improve tomorrow, though...

ブリストル近郊のThornburyにアラタのはとこ、Benのバースデーパーティーに行った。Jasonのいとこ、Davidの奥さんのKarenは英国人で、去年家族でイギリスへ移住してきた。Davidはお姉さんと二人姉弟だが、ニュージーランドから24時間もかかる英国に来て、家まで買っちゃうわけだ。日本だったら長男の親は快く賛成しないだろう。そういえば、Jasonもニュージーランド出身の長男だった。森瑤子も書いていたが、日本の親子はお互いに甘える関係。（英人は）年老いても親が自立している。私の子供達が欧米的な感覚を身に着けたら、日本人の私は将来寂しいと感じるのかなあ…。
私達が教えていない英単語をアラタは知っている。ナーサリー効果。シャボン玉を見た時、えーっと、英語でバブルだっけ？バルーンだっけ？って一瞬戸惑っていたら、アラタが「バブル！」最近はオムツだけではなく、汚いものをみると「ダーティー」で、いたずらすると自分で「ノーティー（悪い子）」と言っている。
トラックを指さしては、私もJasonも「アラタ、トラックだよ」と言っていた。ある日、「ローリー」とイギリス英語で言ってみたら、アラタは初めてリピートした。「トラック」は、米語（ニュージーランドも）。イギリス英語は「ローリー」でした。ちなみに、私は、Lorry（トラック）とLolly(飴）が全然聞き分け・発音し分けられない。JasonによるとアラタはきちんとLとRを分けて発音しているらしい。うらやましい…。
テーブルに登ると「ゲットダウン（降りなさい）」と自分で言っているのも可笑しい。高い所に登るのが好きなので、ナーサリーでいつも注意されているんだと思う。Jasonは同じ状況で、「オフ・ザ・テーブル」と注意するので「ゲットダウン」とは言ったことがなかったのだ。(写真はシャボン玉を飛ばすまねをしているアラタ)
We went to Thornbury, north of Bristol, for Ben's 7th birthday party. Ben's dad is Jason's cousin David. His wife is English and they moved to England a year ago. David has only sister but he has moved to so far away from his parents. In Japan, very often, the first son stays nearby parents to look after them. Jason is the first son as well but lives in England. It's totally different culture. I've read somebody wrote the relationship between Japanese parents and children are dependent, while in the West, they are totally independent. When my children grow up with Western attitudes, am I going to feel very sad when I get old??
Arata's English vocabulary has increased. He learns lots from nursery. When Yuko was blowing bubbles, I was thinking, 'Are they bubbles or balloons in English?' Before I reached the conclusion, Arara said, 'Bubble!!' When Arata sees whatever messy he says, 'Dirty' and when he is mischievous, he himself says, 'Naughty!'
We were saying 'truck' when we saw a truck/lorry. When we realised it's American and Kiwi English, we tried saying 'lorry.' For the first time, Arata repeated it. For me, it's one of the toughest words. I can't hear or pronounce the difference between 'lorry' and 'lolly'! But Jason said Arata pronounces the word 'lorry' correctly. I envy him...
It's quite cute to see Arata keeps saying 'Get down' when he is up on the table. At nursery, he must be often told off when climbed up furnitures Interestingly, Jason has never used the phrase. He always tells Arata off saying 'Off the table' and it's quite obvious that Arata has learnt it at nursery. Arata is trying to blow bubbles in this photo.
ワールドカップ。イタリア系の多いWokingは、試合直後から車で外に出て、ホーンを鳴らしながら祝福する人たちでいまだうるさい！ヘリコプターまで上空を旋回している。私は個人的にはフランスを応援していたからちょっと残念だった。ジダンはレッドカードで有終の美を飾れず。でもまたひとつ伝説が増えたってことさ。アラタの仲良し、トーマのパパはフランス人で、ルークのママはイタリア人だからちょっと複雑な心境だけれども、なにはともあれ、ジョウジィとルーク、おめでとう！
The World Cup is over. In Woking, we have quite a big Italian community. Since the match finished, lots of them have been out in their car tooting their horns madly! Very noisy!!! Even a helicopter has been hovering! I was personally supporting France and my favourite Zidane was sent off by his silly behavior but let's think this way.... he made another episode in his legend... of Arata's best friends, Thoma's dad is French and Luke's mum is Italian... well, congratulations Josie and Luke!
昨日は会社のパーティー。そして今日はRocky Horror Showを観にいったので、Jasonにアラタの面倒をみてもらって、二日連続で夜遊びの私。（それにしてもRocky Horror Showは何回見ても楽しい！）
さて、今日の昼間はスローンスクエアで過ごした。お昼に入ったDuke Of Yorks Squareのカフェには、ロンドンでは珍しくベビーフードがメニューにあった。キッズミールもそこらでやっている、いかにも不健康そうなチップスとフィッシュフィンガーの盛り合わせなんかとは違って、フルーツとサンドイッチというポッシュな組み合わせだった（写真参照）。

で。今回はかなり短くしたので、すっかり変身してしまった。髪が長い方が幼児っぽくって絶対にかわいい！男の子のお母さんがよく言うせりふ、「髪が長めの方がかわいいから、あまり短くしたくないのだけど、ダンナが短くしろって言うのよね～」は今日の状況にぴったり。Jasonが一緒でなかったらこんなにすっきりしなかっただろうな。まあ、夏だからいいんだけど、でも…。
I went to see Rocky Horror Show with my friends this evening. As we had our company's summer party yesterday, Jason had to look after Arata 2 days in row. Thank you Jason!
We went to Sloane Square before my night out today. We had lunch at a cafe in Duke of York Square. The cafe serves baby food. This is very unusual in London. Arata had a kid's meal which includes fruit and sandwiches. It's also quite posh compared to the ordinary kid's meal, chips and fish fingers only, in this country.
We then went to

to have Arata's hair cut. This time his hair has become vert short. It's a bit sad for me because he doesn't look my little baby any more... I often hear a mother with a little boy says, "I prefer my son having a bit longer hair because he looks still 'baby' and cute. But my husband wants him to have short hair." It's exactly our situation today. If Jason hadn't been there with us, Arata didn't have such short hair now. Never mind. It's summer. But....
同じ年齢ぐらいの子供どうしで遊ぶ時に、かなりインターラクトするようになってきた。トーマと遊びながら、相変わらず彼のおもちゃを取っちゃったりと激しいアラタなんだけれど、追っかけっこの真似事や、いないいないばーをして笑いあったりする。この写真は、アラタがトーマの三輪車にまたがり、トーマがそれを押したり引いたりして動かしている所。二人とも楽しそう。
私がWokingからWaterlooまで利用しているサウスウエストトレインには、定期券を持った妊婦を、二等席が満席の場合に一等席にアップグレイドする
Mums-to-be upgradeサービス
がある。申請していた「Mums-to-be」パスが届いた。満席かどうかって、電車の端から端まで歩いてチェックしろとは言わないだろうから、ぎりぎりに乗り込んだ時などに便利そう。そろそろお腹が邪魔で椅子に座るのもつらくなってきた。
When playing with children around the same age, they have started to interact each other. Arata still tries to take the toys Thoma is playing with but they play together as well. They play peek-a-boo together or very simple form of chasing after each other sort of play. Today, Thoma was pushing and pulling the tricycle Arata was on. They looked like they were enjoying it.
I have received a
'Mums-to-be upgrade pass'
from South West Trains. I use the train from Woking to Waterloo and they have a service to upgrade pregnant women to 1st class if no 2nd class seats are available.
残念ながらイングランドがまたもやPKの末に負けてしまった。今日は午前中からタウンセンターに行って、買い物やランチをした。相変わらず街中イングランドのシャツを着た子供や大人だらけ。4時キックオフだったので、お店によっては「通常より早く閉店します」というところも。試合開始後には誰も買い物なんてしてはいない。街はゴーストタウンになる。
ワールドカップ、結構楽しみにしていたのに、意外と「大切な」試合を見逃している。日本VSブラジル、フランスVSスペイン、そして今日のイングランドVSポルトガル。今日のイングランド戦は延長戦からテレビの前に。これはアラタの昼寝と一緒に寝てしまったから。夜の試合は8時開始なのが微妙で、アラタを寝かしつけながら自分も朝まで寝てしまって見損なうといった具合…。
来週は会社帰りにウインブルドンでも…なんて思ってはいるけれど実現はしないだろう。これが「子持ち」ってことね。
England is out of World Cup. They lost on penalties, AGAIN. We went to the town centre in the morning and did shopping and lunch. Lots of people were in England shirt, which made me feel very World Cup! The match was scheduled to start at 4 pm and some shops had signs saying, "We are closing at 5 today." I'm quite sure that nobody is out and about after the match starts.
I was really looking forward to the World Cup but I've missed quite a few 'important' games. Japan vs Brazil, France vs Spain and today's England vs Portugal. When I woke up from a nap with Arata today, England was already playing in the extra time. The games start at 8 pm, I often fall asleep and miss them as well when I'm with Arata at his bed time...
I was going to go to Wimbledon at least once after work but this will probably never happen this year. Never mind, this is the reality of being a mother...
