3Y10M 2Y0M プールめぐり Visiting different pools

英国人のJoが教えてくれたが、ペナンでママ友が増えるとお互い招待しあうので、コンドミニアムのプールめぐりをする事になるらしい。

早速IWAでお友達になったリリアのコンドへ遊びに行った。ここの子供用プールはウオータースライド（滑り台）があって、アラタカラは大喜び。メインプールも大きく深く、プールからの長めは海でとても素敵。おまけに、海に面したフラットなので夜も風が入ってくるのでエアコン要らず、蚊もこないらしいので、うらやましい。次はこんなところに住みたいわ。

Jo told me that once we make friends with kids, we will start to invite each other's condominium, meaning we will start visiting different swimming pools.

We went to Lilia's condo. The paddling pool has a couple of water slides and Aratakara really loved them. The main pool is big and deep and when you are floating in it, you can only see the sea and island. She lives on 8th floor but there are no mosquitoes and they have lots of breeze and don't usually need air-conditioning turned on. We should move to the one like this next time!

3Y10M 2Y0M インターナショナルウイメンズアソシエーション IWA

英国を経って1月だが、ペナン生活はやっと2週間。既にひどい頭痛と吐き気に2回もなったし、シンガポールに住んでいた頃、毎週末頭痛で死んでいたことを思い出してきた。やっぱり暑いのが苦手。

仕事も友達も子育てに慣れた環境も全てなくなってしまい、行動力にはある程度自信がある私も体が本調子ではないとやる気がでない。昼間の湿気と日差しで完全にやられてしまうからどうしようもない。その上、やっと電話がつながったがまだインターネットもダイアルアップだからメールすらまともにおくれないし情報収集もままならない。

街でばったり会った日本人に声をかけたりもしてみたが、引っ越してきたばかりなんですが・・・に「ああ、そうですか」で終わりのパターンになるので、ここペナンは日本人が多すぎるのだと言う事を認識してきた。これがイギリスのWokingやWappingなら「電話番号教えて！」ってすぐにお友達になったもの。

頭痛がしない合間をぬって、とりあえずブリティッシュインターナショナルスクール、St Christpher's　へ行ってみた。アラタもタカラもウエイティングリストらしいが、もしかしたらハーフタームの後にアラタのクラスは空きがあるかもしれないとのこと。まあどちらにしろ、アラタカラ共に午前中だけのクラスのようで、ちょっと迷う。タカラは8時9時のナーサリーに週3日ぐらい入れたい。

やっぱり頭がすっきりしている日に、

IWA (International Women's Association)

という会のメンバーになった。ペナンに住む外人（女性）の会で、いい感じ。ほとんどの人が数年の滞在予定の外国人なので、状況が似ていて役に立つ情報もいろいろ。早速お友達になった英国人女性はクラフトマーケットに誘い出してくれて少し気分転換になった。プレイグループも週一回あるので楽しみ。

It's been a month since we left England. But we've only been in Penang for about 2 weeks. During this short period, I have had terrible headache and sick twice! These remind me of my 2 year stay in Singapore before. Every weekend, I suffered from headache. I'm not good at being in hot weather.

Giving up my work, without my friends and usual environment, I've felt really bad. I'm usually very active in making friends and exploring new places. But with this weather, how can I move around?? Humidity and strong sun knock me out. On top of that, our telephone line has just connected but I can still only connect to the internet by dial up and it's so difficult to gather whatever information I need.

I've come across a couple of Japanese women in town and I had a little chat with them. Even when I said I was new here, their reactions are not that friendly. If it was in Woking or Wapping, we would have exchanged our telephone numbers. I understand Japanese community here is too big and they don't really bother other Japanese much.

Never mind. When I felt better I visited the British international school St Christopher's. Both Aratakara's classes are at the moment full. But there is a slight chance Arata may get a place in 2 weeks. In any case, both classes are only in the morning. I want to send at least Takara for full day!!! I should look for some other day nursery?

And on another day when my head was clear, I went to join

IWA (International Women's Association)

. It's for expatriate women and they have lots of information to help us to settle down here. I've already been to their play group and found members are very friendly. One of the British women has already taken me out to the monthly craft market. Most of them are in the same situation as me, giving up their work to follow their husband and staying here, in a foreign country, for a couple of years. I would probably feel comfortable with them. At least I've found something I can look forward to!

3Y9M 2Y0M オークランドへ Heading to Auckland

ニュージーランド最後の数日で、ウエリントンからオークランドへ車で移動。タウポでは数年前にこの地でなくなったJasonのお父さんの遺灰を撒いた場所に行った。近くのTokaanuの温泉に立ち寄り、ハミルトンではアラタカラのはとこのエミリーとケイリブに会い、最終日はオークランド近郊に住む、4年越しのネット友達のけいちゃん宅に立ち寄った。ネットでのおしゃべりやブログでよく情報交換している仲なので初めて会った気がせず、子供達もすっかりうちとけて、とても楽しかった。またNZへ行った時にはよろしくね！（鼻をほじくっているアラタ・・・）



In the last few days in NZ, we drove up to Auckland. We stayed at Taupo, where Jason's dad died a couple of years ago. We also dipped in hot spring at Tokkanu and in Hamilton, we saw Aratakara's second cousins, Emily and Caleb. On the last day, we visited Keiko's. I got to know her on the internet and we have chatted and exchanged mother's information for over 4 years. But it was the first time to see her and her family. Well, I didn't feel we met for the first time. I felt as if we've known each other for a long time. Both children got on very well as well.　(Arata is picking his nose!)

3Y9M 2Y0M アラタの悲鳴 Arata's scream

食事中に席を離れて遊びだしたタカラは、しかられると、「アラタ、カム！」と巻き込み、滑り台を下りる前に上から必ず「アラタ～」と叫んで、下にいるのを確認する。

アラタカラが一緒に遊ぶようになってくれてとても助かるが、ひとつ困ったことはどうやらタカラはアラタと同じ３才児と思っているらしいこと。プレイグラウンドでも人一倍声が大きいし、アラタと同じことをやりたがる。

実際、物怖じしないので大概のことはできるし、挨拶なんかはアラタよりもずっとよくできるのだが、まだ言うことを聞かないから大変。

アラタとしても「アラタがママのおなかから先に出てきたから、何でも一番じゃなきゃいや」らしく、朝の着替えがタカラより遅かったりすると、ズルをしてまで（タカラの靴下を脱がせるとか）勝とうとして、負けるとしばらく引きずっているから困ったもんだ。

今日は

Staglands Wildlife Reserve　（スタッグランドワイルドライフ保護地）

にファームアニマルを見に行ったが、ハムスターでも、羊でも、怖がらないで触ったり、近距離まで近づいてえさをあげたりしているのはタカラで、アラタは興味があるのだが、動物が反応すると「キャ～～～」と悲鳴を上げていた。



When Takara was told off as he got down the dinner table and started to play, he called, "Arata, come!" and tried to involve him. Takara always calls for Arata before he goes down a big slide at play ground.

It's nice that Arataka have started to play together. Only the problem is Takara seems to believe that he is also 3 years old! He is usually the noisiest one in a play ground, and he wants to do everything Arata does.

Brave Takara can do most of the things and he is better at greetings compared to shy Arata, but he is still just 2 years old. He doesn't listen to us and we get very tired sometimes.

On the other hand, Arata thinks that he has to be better than Takara in whatsoever. He says, "I came out of mummy's tummy first, and I have to win everything." He means even with cheating. This morning, Arata was a bit behind in getting dressed. He was upset and took off one of Takara's socks to be able to be first to finish... When Arata knows he can not over turn the 'results', according to him, he keeps gambling for a while...

We went to

Staglands Wildlife Reserve

to see some farm animals this afternoon. Of course, it was Takara who touched and fed them in close range. Arata was screaming when animals moved!!

3Y9M 2Y0M アザラシを見に行く Seal watching

ウエリントンのサウスコーストに野生のSeal(アザラシ）を見に行った。駐車場から片道１時間半ほどかけて海岸沿いを歩かなければ（4WD車以外乗り入れられない）たどりつけないところにスポットがある。

Phil&Tedsのダブルバギーが本当に役立った。オフロードはこんなのじゃなきゃとてもかなわない。UKでも比較的一般的だったが、なるほど、本国ニュージーランドではほとんどの人がこのバギー。マレーシアは日本同様、このバギーを押しているとみんなが珍しそうに見るけど。

カナダで船に乗ってアザラシウオッチングに参加したことがあるが、アザラシは海から頭を出してぷかぷか浮かんでいた。昨日は嵐のような天気だったから、快晴の今日、アザラシ達は岩場で日光浴。



We went to South coast in Wellington for Seal watching. The spot is 1.5 hours walk from the car park, the entrance of Owhiro bay, as only 4WD can drive through.

Our Phil & Teds double buggy was really useful today. We need this type on such off roads. It's quite popular in the UK but here in NZ, the original country of this buggy, most of the people are pushing this model. Of course in Malaysia, as same as in Japan, everybody looks at us when we are with the buggy!

I've been to seal watching in Canada before. On that occasion, I was on a small ship with other tourists and seals were floating in the sea poping out their head from the water. It was stormy yesterday in Wellington area and today seals were basking on rocks.

3Y9M 2Y0M 作戦？ Jason's strategy?

シンガポールからクライストチャーチ経由でウエリントンに飛んだが、冬の終わりのニュージーランドは空が澄み渡っていて空気もきれいで、マレーシアやイギリスとは大違い。

３年前に来た時は、スリーピーなニュージーランドにあまり住みたいと思わなかったけれども、今回はここも悪くないなあって思った。特にマレーシアの蒸し暑さに辟易していた私は、きれいな街角のニュージーランドに感激。ニュージーランド移住に向けてのJasonの作戦？

アラタがずっと英語を話している姿を見ることは普段ないから、彼の英語に驚いている。語彙も日本語よりずっと多いし、英語の考え方で話しているから、一人前に聞こえる。アラタに「ナナに聞いてごらん」と言うと瞬時で英語で話す。もちろん直訳ではないのがバイリンガルでうらやましい。

Jasonママもアラタの「英国なまりの英語」を楽しんでいる。マレーシアに住んだら、英国なまり、なくなっちゃうのねーって思うと少しさびしいが。



タカラはナーサリーをやめたのと、母がしばらく滞在していたこともあって、英語メインから日本語になりつつあったが、ここ一週間ぐらいで、忘れかけていた英語を思い出してきたようで、今日もプレイグラウンドで上手にフレームに上れて、自分に「ウエルダン！（＝よくできました）」

この一週間、Jasonの弟のエイドリアンや、昨日から来ているグレートナナ（ひいおばあちゃん）に囲まれて、引越しでばたばたしてかまってあげられなくてかんしゃくを起こしまくっていたアラタカラもハッピーになった。



We flew into Christchurch via Singapore, then took one more flight to Wellington. It's the end of winter and the sky is clear and air is clean. It's so beautiful here, even compared to England.

I didn't think I wanted to live in this country when I visited here for the first time 3 years ago, because my impression was that NZ is so sleepy and nothing is happenining. But probably this is Jason's strategy now. This time, I think I don't probably mind living here? Especially after staying in Malaysia...

I have never had a chance to hear Arata speaking English all the time, and to be honest, I'm so impressed by his English. He has much more vacaburarly in English than in Japanese. And as he speaks in very English way, he sounds quite mature.

When I said, "Ask Nana", he switches to English immediately and it's not our typical direct translation. I envy truly bilingual Arata! Jason's mum says, "Arata speaks with British accent." Yes, it's very British and so cute! I will definitely feel sad when he loses this after staying in Penang for a couple of months...

Since Takara stopped going to nursery, and my mum was with us for a while, his main language has been switched to Japanese. But after just a week here, he's started to speak English more. He said, "Well done!" to himself out of blue when he did very well in a climbing frame at a play ground today.

Basically Aratakara have been so happy here. They didn't get much attention from us in the last moth as we were so busy preparing moving and settling in Malaysia. And here, Jason's brother Adrian often comes to see us and since yesterday, their great Nana has been here.

3Y9M 2Y0M タカラ２歳 Takara's 2nd birthday

シンガポール経由でウエリントンに到着したその日がタカラ２歳の誕生日。

Jasonママが焼いてくれたケーキを前に蝋燭を２本立ててハピバースデーを合唱。

We arrived in Wellington via Singapore, on Takara's 2nd birthday. We sang "Happy birthday" and Takara blew the candles in front of the cake Jason's mum baked.

3Y9M 1Y11M 到着 Arrived

24日の夕方、ペナンの新しいフラットに到着しました。思っていた程セレブなフラットではなくて少しがっかりだけど、ま、Jason（男ってこと）に任せて選んだからしょうがない。

翌日の夕方からひどい偏頭痛で吐きまくり、翌々日はJasonが会社を休むはめになってしまった。とても私は子供の面倒を見れそうにないから。引越しまでのストレスと暑さで一気に頭痛になったみたいだけど、古い家具のにおいとか、モスボールのにおいがだめなのかもしれない。契約は一年なので快適な家にできるだけ改造して頑張るしかなさそう。

とはいえ、ラウンジは広々としているし、子供は毎日プールで水遊び。私も今日まで一度も料理せず。一杯3リンギット（50ペンス＝100円ぐらい）のラーメンがその辺で食べられるから、作るよりよっぽど良い。あとは子供の学校を決めて、住み込みのアマさんを探さないと。

近所のモールで会ったアナちゃんとは2日続けて会ったが、明日はハノイに帰ってしまうとのこと。ペナン情報を少しもらってちょっと前向きになってきたが、本格的な始動はニュージーランドから帰ってきてからになりそう。

アラタカラは元気で、暑い中走り回り、はいずりまわり、落とした物を拾って食べたり（イギリスでは目をつぶっていたが、ここではちょっとやめてほしい）、バイキンに強く、そして、たくましくなりそう。既に「レッツ　ゴー　マカン！」なんてマレー語交じりの英語を覚えて楽しそうにしています。

明日から2週間、ニュージーランドへホリデー。

On the evening of the 24th, we arrived to our new home in Penang. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't quite as luxurious as I'd dreamed, but Jason (men!) picked it, so we'll live with it.

By the following evening, I was suffering from a migrane, and Jason had to take a day off work to look after us. The stress from moving combined with the heat brought on my headache, but the smell of old furniture and mothballs might have contributed too. It's a one year contract so we'll have to make some improvements.

That said, the lounge is very spacious and the children enjoy playing in the pool every day. And I haven't cooked once so far. We can buy a bowl of noodles for just 3 MR (50p = 100yen) on every street corner, even cheaper than cooking yourself!

In the last two days, AraTakara have played with Ana, who we met in the nearby shopping mall. But tomorrow her family is going back to Hanoi. I have got some information about living in Penang from her mother, which makes me feel a bit better about moving here, I am sure I will start to settle in after we come back from New Zealand.

AraTakara are happily running around everywhere, picking up food they dropped on the floor (I let them do this in UK, but here I wish they wouldn't), I'm sure their immune systems will become very strong. And they've learnt their first bit of Malay, "Let's go Makan!"

From tomorrow, we'll be on holiday in New Zealand for two weeks.
