中華正月は昨日が最終日だった。写真は先週、周ジェティであった福建中華正月祭りの時のもの。アラタが「太陽は星（の一つ）だよね？」と言った。地球と太陽、宇宙について学校で習ってきたからだ。
私「ダディに英語で聞いてごらん」
ア「えっと・・・」
「サンってスター？」
私「それじゃあ、単語を英語にしてるだけじゃん」
ア「そっか、えっと・・・『って』って何？イズだ・・・」
「サンイズスター？」
来ペ当時は、幼稚園で、「英国訛りの英語を話す日本人のハーフが入って来た」と他のクラスの先生にも話題になったというエピソードがあるが、一年もすると「アラタどうした？マレーシア英語話してるよ」になり、最近は、アマさんも「アラタの英語、何を言いたいのかわからない。」
英語が変なのは私も同じだが、スペリングテストの予習を手伝った時は笑った。その日は「UT」が最後に付く単語のテストだった。
私「カット（CUT＝切る）」
ア CUTと紙に書く。
私「プット（PUT＝置く）」
ア PUT・・・
ここまでは良し。
私「バット（BUT＝しかし）」
ア BAT（こうもり）、そしてこうもりの絵を描いた・・・
私「ハット（HUT＝小屋）」
ア HAT（ぼうし）、そして帽子の絵を描いた・・・
あまりにも見事で爆笑！なんだかんだ言っても、アラタの耳は正確。私は「A」と「U」の区別していません。ごめんなさ～い。これ、ママに難し過ぎる！
Chinese New Year finished yesterday. These photos were taken at Chew Jetty last week when they celebrated the Hokkien Chinese New Year.
Arata said out of blue, "The sun is one of the stars, isn't it?" He has recently learnt about the sun, the earth and stars.
I said, "Ask daddy in English."
Ar: "... Sun tte Star?" ("tte" means "is" in Japanese.)
Me: "You only used English words in Japanese sentence..."
Ar: "Okay.... what is 'tte' in English.... it is 'is'......so.... Sun is star, daddy?"
When we moved to Penang, all the teachers at Arata's kindergarten came to see him after hearing there was a new boy who speaks British English. A year later, they said, "What's happened to Arata? He speaks Malaysian English!" Then nowadays, our Amah, often says, "I don't understand what Arata is trying to say!"
I can't only laugh at Arata. My English is also a problem. I helped Arata to prepare for a spelling test. There were a couple of words with "ut" ending.
Me: "Cut"
Ar: wrote "cut"
Me: "Put"
Ar: wrote "put"
So far so good.
Me: "But"
Ar: wrote "bat" and drew a picture of a bat flying
Me: "Hut"
Ar: wrote "hat" and drew a picture of a magician's hat
I burst into laughter. Of course, Arata didn't get it, he just wrote as he'd heard. I apparently pronounce "u" as "a". It's difficult to help him English.....
