Miscellaneous thoughts about Arata's education

もちろん、ペナンの英国系インター、SCIPS(セントクリストファーインターナショナルプライマリースクール)に入れれば、同様のシステムの学校教育を受けられる。

Which school shall we send Arata to? When we first arrived in Penang, I was thinking to send him to a British international primary school without any doubts. But since then, I've kept changing my mind...

If we were still in England, Arata must have finished the Pre-school and the Reception, and now he would be studying in the Primary School year 1. Of course, he has an option to do that at the International School, SCIPS, in Penang.

The problem is SICPS is not a government-run school unlike Penang Japanese school. It's just a private school. They don't take more than certain number of children, and they have long waiting lists. On top of that, there must be something smelly going on. The children on the top of the list are not always called up to get a place.

To be honest, I am quite fed up with this and that about SCIPS. So Japanese School is also our option at the moment. In any case, I've always wanted my boys to learn Japanese up to the Japanese Primary school year 6 level, with 1000 Chinese characters. But our next destination will be another English speaking country, for sure. How about one of the local schools, that teaches English, Mandarin and Bahasa? They have a very bad reputation among expatriates because local schools tend to push kids too much with the threat of punishment. All things considered, SCIPS seems to be the only choice for us.

We have a Japanese full time school in Penang and in fact Aratakara have 2 choices of schools. For those from non-English speaking countries in Europe, they have only one choice, English medium international schools. This means the Japanese families who send their kids to an international school are more ambitious on their children's education.

To start with, me and Jason are far from education-oriented parents. Secondly, I think I will fully use the school lunch delivery services for Arata, as lots of non-Japanese mums are doing, while most of the Japanese mums wake up early to prepare lunch boxes. So I feel a bit worried if I could get on well with other Japanese mums at SCIPS. Well, apart from that, it looks fun to meet so many people with different background.

Our decision at the moment is sending Arata to SCIPS from next January. We still have an option to send him to Japanese school from April, for just in case.

Arata have already and will have missed the first term of Year 1, as well as the Reception year. Even 3 year old children at SCIPS learn how to read and write a bit, while Taska Nania won't teach much of reading and writing even for the oldest children groups. It's apparent that the 6 year old can learn quicker than the 3 years. And in my opinion it's a waste of time to spend on studying at early stage, they can use the precious time on playing instead.

Whatever I think, I am distressingly sure that Arata will struggle at least in the beginning. And in this sense, I'm not quite confident about our decisions so far, whether we made right decisions for Arata.....

When I asked Jason whether it was the right thing to keep Arata at Taska Nania and not sending him to a school earlier, he said, "In free and creative environment, children won't feel stress and they can think and try freely, which gives them confidence." Yes, that's totally true. Even it may be difficult at first, children can catch up quickly. I have to believe my boys are spending very important time of their lives in the precious and special environment.
